Making her animated debut more than seventy years ago, Betty Boop remains a glamorous international icon .....

Before Marilyn and Madonna, Betty booped and wriggled her way into hearts worldwide with her unique mix of wide-eyed innocence and powerful cartoon sensuality. Although she made her film debut as a curvaceous canine cabaret singer in the Max Fleischer short 'Dizzy Dishes' on August 9, 1930, Betty Boop remains animation's first leading lady and a glamorous international icon.

Betty Boop first appeared in the summer of 1930. She was in the cartoon Dizzy Dishes, an episode of the Fleischer's Talkartoon series. Her original design was by an experienced animator called Grim Natwick. he had spent his working life in silent movies. he became a top director and animator for the Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks studios. Betty Boop was modelled partly on Helen Kane, the popular, famous singer of the early 1920s. Betty Boop was also modelled on Clara Bow. She was a well-known actress in the 1920s who had struggled since the birth of the talkies because she had such a heavy Brooklyn accent. But Clara was the perfect model for Betty Boop. Natwick, directed by Dave Fleischer, designed the character originally in the style of a 'human' French poodle. The voice of the character was performed originally by Margie Hines. Following this, a host of other actresses provided Betty Boop's voice - Bonnie Poe and Ann Rothschild (Little Ann Little) to name a couple. One of the most famous was Mae Questel who started in 1931 and kept on until 1938.
