Steiff 'button ear' tags
Since the very early days of Steiff's long and colourful history, each piece animal or teddy bear has been manufactured with the famous 'Button In Ear' identity tag. There are a variety of different tags to identify different types of Steiff Animal or Bear -
Limited Editions - (White and Red Ear Tag) Every single Steiff Limited Edition is finished off with a white tag with red writing, fastened with a gold plated 'button in ear'. Along with a Certificate of Authenticity, this assures the owner that their Steiff piece is a genuine Limited Edition.
Open Editions - The Yellow tag with red writing signifies that the item is a genuine Steiff product, but not a Limited Edition. These yellow and red tags are attached to the item by means of a brass plated tag.
Steiff Replicas - A white tag with black writing. Occasionally Steiff produce Replica products. These are pieces originally launched many years ago, which they have decided to re-launch. This could be in order to commemorate a special anniversary. A good recent example is Othello, the Titanic bear, originally produced in 1912 to mark the occasion of the sinking of the Titanic.
Steiff Mohair - Mohair - Lustrous, shiny and sleek. This natural material from the wool of the angora goat is the traditional Teddy bear material. In fact, it was used for the first Teddy bear ever created. The fiber is both beautiful and durable, which accounts for the amazing number of vintage Steiff creations that appear today in superb condition.
